The coach assured that he never considers the player's club or his age: "it's not a cliché"

After announcing the squad list for the 2022 World Cup, Spain coach Luis Enrique Martínez explained why FC Barcelona contributed the most players to the national team yet again.

At the press conference following the announcement, Luis Enrique was very blunt:

"It's not a cliché. I don't look at which clubs they are from," he assured, nor does he intend to base himself on a particular team despite his Culé past as a player and coach.

"I have no intention of founding a team in the national team. I think it's the other way around, most Barça players have played for their club because they played for the national team. I don't look at how many players there are from a club, just as I don't look at age or other circumstances other than the game."

He added what matters to him when it comes to selection:

"I choose based on the criteria that we believe are important to develop our system of play".

In stark contrast to Barcelona, only two Real Madrid players made it to Spain's 2022 World Cup squad. Lucho even joked about that, saying:

"You'll see how many sticks I'm going to get" for that, concluding that "I am the best coach in history, on the face of the earth".
