Zinedine Zidane on the edge of the sack

The French coach could quickly be axed in the capital by an anxious Florentino Perez

Zinedine Zidane is heading towards the exit at Real Madrid. The defeat by Levante, the team’s poor physical and (lack of) competitive image has increased the nerves level in the Spanish capital. They are starting to see they will win nothing this season.

Florentino Perez wants to save what he can and Zidane could be sacked next week if Madrid lose against Huesca, he could well be sacked. They are looking at external candidates because they want a coach with a tough streak and good tactical nous to give them a chance in the Champions League.

At Madrid they knew it was going to be a tough year. The economic crisis has affected the club and Florentino has prioritised the reconstruction of the Bernabeu over the sporting project. The team has not been reinforced and the young players have not taken a step forward, especially Vinicius Junior.

Despite that, they think the squad should be achieving far better results than they are and that Atalanta could possibly eliminate them, ending their season in March.

Florentino and the board have always bet on Zidane’s management of the dressing room, but they think that things have gotten out of hand. Madrid are looking bad physically and they don’t have much tactical flexibility under Zidane. Martin Odegaard’s departure, sanctioned by Zidane, did not please Florentino either. Even if Zidane survivors for now, he will not be leading the team next season.
