Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo's 'perfect robbery'

Xavier Ortuño believes Madrid have erred by giving a declining Ronaldo a deal until he is 36

Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract renewal with Real Madrid until 2021 is magnificent news. Los Blancos have allowed a Cristiano Ronaldo in his worse moment since joining the club to sign an agreement which ties him to the Santiago Bernabeu until he is 36. For a player whose game is all about the physical aspects to get a deal until that age is little more than a ‘robbery’.

What’s more, on Monday we will see Madrid bring out the confetti, the party streamers and the ostentatious videos to announce the Portuguese international’s golden retirement -- the very same player who’s been seen more recently showing off shoes and scarves on Instagram than celebrating goals. And the truth is they are unlikely to show a lot of goals from this last few years because most of them have been accumulated in inconsequential matches, while he did not appear in the big games.

The renovation has a tone of unilateralism about it. Madrid were left with little option but to heed to Ronaldo’s demands, which beyond just numbers, featured a condition: to be the biggest earner in the team. And once he saw that Gareth Bale had jumped above his salary, deservedly, as seen Sunday against Leganes on Sunday, he quickly forced through his new deal to move back to the top of the pay scale.

Real Madrid, have seen legends like Raul and Iker Casillas leave through the back door before, but have now tied Ronaldo down until he is 36. I see only reasons to toast the new deal. Long live CR7’s renewal!
