It’s been a long time since Barcelona beat a ‘direct rival’ in La Liga or in Europe. Not just not beaten, but not even competed. The decline has weighed in the players minds, needing a win like this one over Atletico, to show they can beat anyone. Barcelona played a complete game, above all in attack, punishing Simeone’s side. It was a hopeful first half, with almost total superiority, good football and goals. The Blaugrana enjoyed themselves. They were decisive, and people better get ready because they have the chance to do well this season still.

There’s no doubt Xavi had this game marked in the calendar. It was a clash worth six points. And they took it on with the new signings involved, clear starters. They had their possession system and a bet on the spectacular along with ruesults. And, really, Xavi’s men didn’t let anyone down. Despite the early goal conceded they put on an attacking festival that reminded us of Barca at their best. A Barcelona that has ben kidnapped for years.

The plan is stating to work. Against Atletico, the signings were crucial. Alves is living a second youth, Adama brought the fans to their feet, leaving nobody worrying about missing Ousmane Dembele. He won’t play much this season now. Barcelona are heading upwards, but still have things to improve. They suffer defensively, with individual errors that keep creating fear, but it’s a scenario that invites dreaming. Barcelona are back. They are in the top four. And they have license to improve. At last.
