Talks were quicker and easier than anyone could have imagined

Zinedine Zidane's return to Real Madrid was the best option Florentino Perez had to end the sporting crisis at the club. A well-thought of coach who has won everything and is liked by the fans. The problem was convincing him to come back. Keeping on Santi Solari, who was at odds with Isco, Marcelo and Bale, was a risk. There had to be a new coach who knew the club and could take over immediately.

The selection was made quickly. Jose Mourinho was a risky choice because many were against him coming bacl. Even some of the big players in the dresing room. Mauricio Pochettino was an option but his contract with Tottenham meant a large fee would have to be paid. Joachim Low said no and Allegri wanted to leave things until later. All paths led to Zidane. After initial talks were positive, it was the president who took control of the negotiations.

Perez called Zidane to his office to convince him. In his hand, he had two cards. One was to guarantee him sporting control this time. The other was to make a financial offer he could not refuse -- almost double what he earned before, 12 million euros plus bonuses.

It goes without saying that Perez has affection and admiration for Zidane, who won three Champions Leagues as coach. And Zidane is grateful to Perez for giving him his first chance as a coach.

Perez: "Remember that I always backed you. In 2013, I advised Ancelotti to make you his No.2. One year later, I gave you the Castilla job for experience. And two years later, in 2016, you became first team coach at a difficult moment but with lots of success. Now we're in another tough spot and I need you to take Madrid back to where they should be."

Zidane: “President, I will always be grateful to Madrid. The club is in my heart and I can't forget how much you have done for me. If you need my services, I am always ready to return as and when the problems which led to me leaving last summer are solved. I think things have to be changed and this is a good moment."

That's how Zidane's return was done. Easier and quicker than imagined. The prodigal son is back and Perez is saved when he was against the ropes. The era began with Isco, Marcelo and Bale back in the team and a 2-0 win over Celta Vigo after four straight home defeats.
