No Champions League, but Barcelona get their dignity back

There was no miracle. Barcelona’s comeback, despite a great game, and the Champions League dream, again, did not come to fruition. Six years of disappointments and failures in Europe. A bad balance for a team that in theory always aspires to win the competition. Too many ridiculous results like the 8-2, that make you wonder about the real value of this squad. Their footballing degradation has gone in parallel with their institutional crisis and financial crumbling, under the terrible reign of Bartomeu.

From the 2015 treble with Luis Enrique, and the Messi-Suarez-Neymar trident, to nothing. Koeman has started a reconstruction that, after Laporta’s election win, should start to consolidate. The league and the cup are real objectives. Two hypothetical titles in a transition season would be a great success. The Champions League KO should not cut short that hope. Instead, it should give them more, more enthusiasm, for the other tournaments. The team can grow in confidence with the hope that Laporta transmits as president.

Barca were knocked out but they played as if they could make the miracle happen, with pride, intensity and an impeccable attitude. The game helped clean Barcelona’s image and brought them back lost dignity. There was no miracle but the conviction that Barca is starting to revive themselves. In the presidential box and on the pitch.
