The message 'Merchi' on her shirt had generated a lot of debate on social media

Olga Carmona, captain of the Spanish national football team, said after scoring the winning goal that made La Roja world champions on Sunday that they knew "it was going to be complicated" but they had "the vibe" that they were going to get it done.

"It was a very tough match, we knew it was going to be very difficult. England have a really great team, but I think this was for us," said the Sevillian to RTVE.

She also explained the reason for her celebration after the goal, when she showed a T-shirt she was wearing underneath with the name 'Merchi'

"This victory is for the mother of one of my best friends who passed away recently," she added.

"I celebrated with her on the shirt and from here I dedicate it to her family with all my love."
