"This is an act loaded with symbolism for us," said Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu as the first brick of the Johan Cruyff Stadium was placed. "We've chosen to do this today because the 14 and 9 (September 14) were numbers linked with the life of Johan Cruyff. Players from La Masia can return again to seeing the stadium wehre their dreams should grow out of the window."

The objective is to create a stadium for 6,000 fans, which will cost 12m euros and be opened in 14 months. Various attendees to the event put objects in a mamory box which symbolises the first brick being placed.

  • Susila Cruyff, daughter of Johan Cruyff and president of his foundation left a small statue of her father
  • Andrés Iniesta, accompanied by president Bartomeu, put in a ball signed by all the first-team players
  • Laura Ràfols and Sergi Palencia, captains of Barça Femenino and del Barça B, left a signed shirt signed by the other players in their respective sides
  • Jordi Moix, Barcelona's director who is in charge of the Espai Barca, left a helmet from the works on that project
  • The mayor of Sant Joan Despí, Antoni Poveda, representing one of his most emblematic buildings, the Can Negre modernist house located in Sant Joan Despí
  • They also put in the latest issue of the Barça magazine, the front pages of the day's newspapers and some current currency.
