Villarreal 1-3 Barcelona: Late Memphis & Coutinho goals seal away win

Barça won away from Camp Nou in LaLiga for thee first time this season

Barcelona secured their first away win in LaLiga this season as late goals from Memphis Depay and Philippe Coutinho helped them beat Villarreal 3-1 on Saturday.

Frenkie de Jong opened the scoring at the Estadio de la Ceramica but Samuel Chukwueze looked to have earned a point for the home team.

However, Memphis seized on Pervis Estupinan's poor header to restore Barca's lead in the 88th minute and Coutinho came off the bench to win and score a stoppage-time penalty.

There was no shortage of action as Barca secured back-to-back league wins for the first time this season to move within three points of the top four, although fourth placed Atletico Madrid have a game in hand.

Barca have now won two and drawn one of their three games under new coach Xavi Hernandez.

Xavi made two changes from the midweek draw with Benfica. Eric Garcia replaced Clement Lenglet and Abde came in for Yusuf Demir on the right win.

Dani Parejo could have been sent off for Villarreal for a foul on Sergio Busquets early on as the game exploded into life. Abde and Gavi hit the woodwork for Barca while Gerard Pique was lucky not to give away a penalty as he blocked a shot with his hand.

Memphis missed a good chance for Barca after good work from De Jong before Villarreal took over in the final 25 minutes of the first half. Unai Emery's side found joy down Barca's right but could not find the breakthrough.

Instead, De Jong found it early in the second half. He tapped home from two yards. The goal was initially ruled out for an offside against Memphis but VAR overturned the decision after a delay of over two minutes.

Villarreal responded well and eventually levelled in the 76th minute when Chukwueze converted after slipping in between two Barca defenders.

The home side were pushing for a winner and twice came close when Memphis caught them on the break. Estupinan's played him in and he showed a cool head to round the goalkeeper and roll into an empty net.

There was still time for Coutinho to come on, win a penalty and convert it as the Xavi era clicked into gear.
