Time for Sergino Dest to earn Xavi's confidence
The right back is likely to start against Espanyol with Dani Alves out through suspension
Barcelona will look to continue the good feelings generated against Atletico Madrid, not fixing what isn’t broken. The only change will be Sergino Dest coming in for Dani Alves, who is suspended.
The American had a tough end to 2021 but has found his form and confidence and is ready to prove he can be useful for the team.
A red card for Dani Alves against Atletico has given the former Ajax player a great chance to start against Espanyol. Xavi has Eric Garcia back too. If Eric comes in then Xavi may switch to 3-4-3 but on pole position is Dest, for 4-3-3.
There were lots of rumours Dest could leave in the winter window but the player has always wanted to prove to Xavi he should be playing. Back problems stopped him reaching his best level but he’s fit now and is certain he can help. His speed allows him to help make corrections in defence as well as to appear in attack.
The American was a starter against Alaves too, impressing in the second half and he was also solid against Atletico when he came on.
Dest, if he does well against Espanyol, will hold the spot against Napoli in the Europa League, where Dani Alves is not registered. Two games for him to show his quality and earn Xavi’s confidence.
