Only Messi's release clause is higher than the defender's

Coutinho and Dembele's are only set at 400 million euros

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique's new contract with the club, which was agreed on Thursday, sees his release clause rise to 500 million euros.

Only Lionel Messi, at 700 million, has a higher buyout option than the defender.

Pique's deal had been due to expire in 2019 and his release clause was 200 million, having initially been 50 million when he joined in 2008 -- so it's multiplied by 10 in 10 years.

The Catalan player's release clause is even higher than record signings Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele (both 400 million), while Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta could all buy out their deals for 200 million.

Then comes Marc-Andre Ter Stegen (180 million), Jordi Alba (150 million), Ivan Rakitic (125 million) and Paulinho (120 million).
