Malcom's starring role against Inter could kickstart Barça career

The Brazilian made a huge impact off the bench against the Italians

No one expected it. Not even the player himself. But Malcom dressed up as the hero at a stadium as imposing as the San Siro and against a rival as historic as Inter. He'd hardly appeared this season. In fact, he's been left out of five of the last 11 squads, suggesting a lack of confidence in him not only as a regular, but as a player who can change games.

The former Bordeuax forward didn't even travel with the team for Saturday's game at Rayo Vallecano. But his luck may have changed. With Lionel Messi not fit to return, Malcom returned to the squad for the game against Inter -- while Munir was left in the stands.

Coach Ernesto Valverde had him on the bench in case he was needed to help turn the game around or provide a spark. And in the 81st minute, he was needed. Ousmane Dembele, who did well in patches, was replaced by the Brazilian. Things could not have gone better. Philippe Coutinho fed Malcom and his left foot did the rest.

A starring role. Less than two minutes had passed since ha had come on. The next time he had the ball he drew a yellow card for Brozovic. Until the end he wanted the ball. "This goal will stay in my memory," he said after the game, his celebration having drawn tears. It seems that Malcom's back on track.

The only downside was that his goal didn't bring three points. He gave Barça a late lead but Inter fought back, Mauro Icardi equalising in the 87th minute.

MALCOM'S IMPACT:

  1. Took less than two minutes to score (came on in 81' and scored in 83').
  2. Needed just three touches to beat Handanovic and make it 1-0.
  3. He drew a yellow card for Brozovic, who couldn't deal with him.
  4. One shot on target (the goal).
  5. Had been left out of five of the last 11 Barça squads.
  6. Has played just 27 minutes in La Liga (7 in Valladolid and 20 at Leganes).
  7. Missed three games injured (Girona, Real Sociedad y PSV).
