The Barca chief was at Mestalla for the clash with Valencia

FC Barcelona’s women’s team made history on Sunday, reaching the Champions League final for the second time in the last three years. They beat PSG at the Johan Cruyff stadium. Although Lluis Cortes’s side thrilled, another aspect was the criticism for Joan Laporta, the club president for not turning up.

He was in Valencia, accompanying the first team and because of coronavirus protocols, he had to choose one game to go to. He went for Ronald Koeman’s side. On Monday Cortes revealed on Cadena SER that he apologised to the women’s team, who play their Champions League final on May 16.

“Laporta and Yuste apologised the day before, they had the game in Valencia and that’s normal too,” said Cortes. “The men’s team is playing for many things. It’s impossible for them to be everywhere, the calendar is completely full of commitments.”

Captain Vicky Losada added on RAC1: “Laporta came to the training ground, we know we have his support. We’re in constant contact with the president. He said sorry, he’s someone you can talk to with trust and I’m sure we’ll have great moments with him.”

Barca women will face Chelsea in the final in Gothenburg on May 16, without fans in the stands.
