Low will have to make a decision between Neuer and Ter Stegen over the coming months

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is having an excellent season again, could finally achieve one of his pending goals: becoming Germany's No.1.

After the failure to progress from the group stages of the World Cup and the UEFA Nations League letdowns against France and Holland, Joachim Low held on to his job but he has said he will now force through a generational change.

Low announced this week that he had personally told Bayern Munich trio Matts Hummels, Jerome Boateng and Thomas Müller that he would no longer call them up. He thanked them for everything but said it's time to think about the future.

The renewal of the squad looks set to reach the goalkeeping position, too, although more gradually. The goalkeeper and captain for Bayern and Germany, Manuel Neuer, is an icon of the golden era in German football. After recovering from an injury, he was given the gloves back at the World Cup, despite Ter Stegen proving he was ready to be No.1 in his absence.

LOW OPENS THE DOOR

If in that moment he had to accept the situation, Ter Stegen has not given up on his legitmate desire to be Germany's No.1 after conquering Camp Nou. His fotm his exceptional and he wants to have regular games with his national team.

Low was in Madrid with Andres Kopke, Germany's goalkeeper coach, to watch the recent Clasicos between Real Madrid and Barça.

Speaking to DAZN, he backed Ter Stegen's comments about his desire to be the top man: "It wasn't an attack on Manuel Neuer or the coaches. I shared his ambition and he's right because he's developed into a great goalkeeper in the last two or three years."

And, more importantly, Low opened the door: "We're happy to have two world class goalkeepers in Germany, Last year I said that Neuer is the No.1, because he's also our captain. But this year we're starting again and Marc will have opportunities in the qualification games for Euro 2020."

MARCH TEST

The German boss clarified that nothing is decided and that Neuer and Ter Stegen both have the chance to be No.1.

"Of course, there will be a battle and, in the end, the performance of the player is what counts," he said. "Manuel had some good performances at the World Cup, even though he'd had a long injury. They're both at a good level, so we will see what happens this year. I'm sure Marc will have some games."

Germany's next games are a friendly against Serbia (March 20) and a qualifier for the Euros against Holland (March 24). No one doubts that, save injuries, both will be in the squad. Who will be the starter? We will see...
