Frenkie De Jong bringing Barca, brains, lungs and leadership

The Dutchman had a fine game as Barca beat Sevilla 2-0 away

It’s inarguable that Frenkie de Jong has grown as a player in recent months. He has stepped forward and taken responsibility on like Koeman wanted and Barca fans hoped he would. Last season he was a little timid but now he’s showing his quality. Physically he offers a lot of pressure and he is bold and demands the ball, never hiding. He battled with Jordan, one of the filthiest players in La Liga, while Fernando, Rakitic and Papu Gomez also tangled with him.

In attack, De Jong started virtually everything. His ball for Dembele helped Barca get their first shot on goal.

His great stamina and energy helps him appear in all places,, attack and defence.

He had a great first half against Sevilla and maintained that level after the break, nearly setting up Jordi Alba.

Former team-mate Ivan Rakitic couldn’t handle him and De Jong emerged on top virtually every time. He’s irreplaceable at Barca now, a true leader and that’s good news for the team.
