Barcelona player ratings: Messi & Alba rip through Celta in Copa
Messi and Alba both scored in a brilliant opening 45 minutes
Suarez and Rakitic were also on target in the 5-0 win at Camp Nou
Barcelona eased into the Copa del Rey quarterfinal with a crushing 5-0 win against Celta Vigo on Thursday, 6-1 on aggregate. Lionel Messi (2), Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Ivan Rakitic got the goals. Here are the player ratings.
Jasper Cillessen (6): Had little to do but was good with his feet.
Nelson Semedo (7): Another lively showing from the right-back, who looks at his best in games when Barcelona are on form and attacking freely.
Gerard Pique (6): As easy an evening as he will have. Spent the first half watching his side attack — joining in when he could — and was taken off at the break, given a rest.
Javier Mascherano (7): Quickly left the pitch at the end of what could be his final game at Camp Nou before a move to China. Before then, he’d produced another typically solid display.
Jordi Alba (9): The king of the left wing. Another virtuoso display from the full-back, who’s having the season of his life. Set up the first two goals for Messi and then scored the third himself.
Sergio Busquets (7): Read the game well, kept things ticking and hardly seemed to even break sweat.
Ivan Rakitic (8): The Croatian was good. An energetic performance, plenty of good passing and a goal to boot, an unmarked header from a Dembele performance.
Andre Gomes (7): Thrown in by Valverde as an example that he will get minutes if he remains at Barça. Did well.
Andres Iniesta (7): Created one great chance for Messi and came close to scoring himself, denied by Sergio Alvarez. Taken off after an hour with Real Sociedad in mind.
Lionel Messi (9): Two goals and an assist in a brilliant first half performance. Unable to score another hat-trick, though, as he was taken off with just 10 minutes gone in the second half with Barça in complete control.
Luis Suarez (8): On target again but was offside far too often, which remains a theme despite his return to form. His goal was very well taken, though, after a mistake by Pione Sisto. Almost scored another with a great effort from 40 yards and worked incredibly hard.
Substitutes:
Thomas Vermaelen (7): One brilliant tackle to stop Maxi Gomez showed the sort of form he’s in at the moment and the confidence he’s gained by playing regularly.
Ousmane Dembele (7): Excited with his pace, created chances and had one shot blocked. Question marks over his decision making but the home supporters came alive every time he touched the ball.
Jose Arnaiz (6): Unable to add to his Copa tally of goals in a quiet performance off the bench.
NI bien ni mal. Difícil de definir su primera mitad porque entró tan poco en juego que dio la impresión de estar bostezando. Partido plácido para el holandés.
Busca sumarse al equipo en ataque y ayudar todo lo que puede, pero el peso de la banda izquierda es tan grande que pasa desapercibido. Muy seguro en defensa gracias a su velocidad, imprescindible ante el Celta. Ha tardado poco en integrarse.
Menos participativo con el balón que en otras ocasiones, tiene la experiencia necesaria para saber su papel en cada partido y circunstancia. Aspas le exigió pocas aventuras.
Dicen que se va, pero ahí sigue, dándolo todo como si fuera un juvenil. Profesional hasta las últimas consecuencias. Que Alba suba sin mirar atrás también es mérito suyo. Se ha ganado el derecho a decidir.
Quizás la mejor primera parte que ha jugado con la camiseta del Barça. Dos asistencias a Messi y dos goles. Cogió el taladro y abrió un boquete en la banda izquierda que el Celta no pudo taponar. Perfecto.
Recibir, controlar y tocar. Siempre que pudo, al primer toque. Sergio disfrutó del vendaval de sus compañeros en ataque con un fútbol pragmático sin florituras. Su cerebro es puro fútbol.
Alba, Messi y Suárez decidían, pero casi todos los balones pasaban por un Rakitic que, por delante de Busquets, ejercía de eje vertebrador del juego blaugrana. Disfrutó tocando y tocando sin descanso y lo celebró con un gol. Un grande.
La extraordinaria primera parte de Alba, a su lado, dejó en un segundo plano al de Fuentealbilla, que pudo marcar en un disparo franco que se fue alto. Que el foco no le alumbrara, sin embargo, ni significa que no jugara bien. De hecho, no sabe.
Como en el cole. Mejoró su rendimiento habitual. Sobre todo porque no perdió muchos balones, pero un fichaje como el suyo debe dar más. André aún debe decidir qué quiere ser de grande.
Fue un incordio durante toda la primera mitad y, al final, encontró el premio marcando el cuarto del Barça. Suárez ya ha dejado atrás aquella racha que le borraba la sonrisa del rostro. No hay mejor nueve que él.
Es el rey de la fiesta y, si no está invitado, falta algo. Como en la ida. Dos asistencias desde la izquierda de Alba, dos remates de primera y dos goles. Pedirle más sería abusivo. Un genio al que Valverde dio descanso en la segunda mitad y se fue ovacionado.
Suma más minutos en las últimas semanas que en los últimos años. Está disfrutando de nuevo del fútbol y el Barça está disfrutando de él. Fue suplente porque tampoco hay que forzar. Salió tras el descanso por Piqué.
Falta mucho, y el propio jugador así lo entiende, para ver la mejor versión de Dembélé, pero en la segunda mitad volvió a ofrecer detalles de los que el Camp Nou agradece y así pudo notarlo el jugador. Centró para el gol de Rakitic.
Su buen rendimiento en la Copa le permitió entrar en la lista y salir en la segunda mitad por Iniesta. Gusta a Valverde y así se lo hace saber, sobre todo en la Copa. Lo probó con un disparo que se marchó fuera.
