Memphis is injured and may well no longer be a starter for the Catalans

Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona has opened a debate over who should take penalties. The initial answer was Memphis Depay, who has scored three of the four spot kicks he has taken, But now he is injured and when he’s back he will face a lot of competition for a starting spot. So the penalty taker position is open again.

The only penalty not taken by Memphis this season was Coutinho against Villarreal; and he has gone to Aston Villa on loan.

Ferran Torres, Frenkie de Jong and Dani Alves are the favourites to take over the duty. Aubameyang has the most experience, scoring 34 form 45 kicks, 75 per cent, but he’s not got starting status.

Memphis has a similar record, 76 per cent, whereas specialists are usually higher - Ramos 90%, Lewandowski 85%, Benzema 85%.

Another possibility, on top of frontrunners Ferran, Frenkie and Alves, is Gerard Pique.
