Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez will extend his contract until 2026

Last March, at an event at the Círculo Ecuestre in Barcelona, Joan Laporta announced that he was considering offering Xavi Hernández a contract renewal "even if we don't win the league." The Barça president was delighted with the work carried out by the coach and his understanding of the club's economic situation.

Laporta appreciated the fact that Xavi always supported for the club and did not demand the impossible. Xavi wanted to focus on the sporting aspect and his team ended up winning the league, which further confirmed that starting to think about renewing him was more than justified. The two parties continued to talk discreetly, but whenever the coach was asked about his continuity, he repeated the same thing: "There will be no problems."

In June, Laporta insisted that the coach's renewal was not a "priority" because the first priority was to "build a competitive team," but with this objective now achieved, much progress has been made in the coach's continuity.

And so, Xavi's continuity is practically assured. He will extend his contract with Barça until 30 June 2026. His current contract expires next summer.

"My renewal? From zero to 10 it is 10 out of 10," he said on Aug. 18. He spoke with full knowledge of the facts because the main details of his extension had already been agreed. 

This week, no news is expected in this respect because the one who has to finalise the deal is the new head of sport, Deco. And the Portuguese executive is away. He has taken a few days off after the hard work done during the transfer market.

When he returns, there could be news and the agreement could be officially announced.

No one at the club doubts that Xavi must continue to lead the project. Last season, he managed to win two trophies, LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup, and he has completed the rebuilding of the team in record time. The current Barça is totally different to the one he took over from Ronald Koeman. Their big challenge is to be competitive in the Champions League again and this year they cannot afford another slip-up.

Agreement

Despite the fact that every negotiation has its 'timings' and that stones often appear along the way, the fluidity between the club and Xavi has been absolute. Both parties were clear that they wanted to remain united and all differences have been bridged.

The coach will achieve improvements personally and also for his coaching staff and the people he trusts, while he will be able to continue working on an ambitious project that aims to turn Barça back into a European powerhouse, not only in terms of image but also in terms of sporting results.

The first steps have already been taken and they managed to win back LaLiga, but what Xavi aspires to, and also those in charge of the club, is to once again dominate Spanish and European football.
