The club claim they were offered the chance to sign Fasson for nothing so won't negotiate a fee with Sao Paulo

FC Barcelona have responded to Sao Paulo after finding out that Lucas Fasson was still under contract with the Brazilian club.

Sao Paulo sent a message to Barça asking them to pay the player's buyout clause if they wanted to sign him.

Barça responded by saying they were offered Fasson on a free transfer after understanding the young defender was available to sign for any team. In the same answer, Barça said that if they ever wanted to sign Fasson they would speak directly with Sao Paulo. The plan, if the defender became available, was to add him to Barça B.

Release clause stands at 40 million euros

Fasson, despite being just 19, has a release clause of €40m which Barça have no intention of paying.

Fasson believed that after three years with the Brazilian club he had the right to leave on a free transfer due to the Pele law. However, Sao Paulo are confident they don't need to respect the player's choice of wanting to leave. This is because the law and club involved are both Brazilian so it'd go through the national legislation and FIFA can't get involved.
